Role of the Dog *

The facility should attend work with their handler at least 75 percent of the time, unless job is unsafe and pgi is aware the dog is not working in full capacity.
Facility dogs are trained to work only in the school, work, facility setting, or settings that are required for their job. They do not have full public access like a service dog. They should not be taken on errands in the community in non pet friendly locations. Handler demonstrates verbal understanding of this.
The handler understands the difference between a service dog and a facility dog. Bonus points if they provide extra training for their staff on the difference 🙂
A facility dog should be on a leash or confined in an office unless they are doing a specific task in which a leash will inhibit its ability to complete this task. A facility dog should never be left loose unsupervised in a building or alone outside the facility.
The facility dog will be properly confined if left alone (crate or a locked office). The facility dog will not be left tethered unsupervised. Please verify the setting is safe and secure for the dog when it is being left alone.
A facility dog will not show aggressive behavior at the facility
A facility dog will not have accidents in the facility or other public settings. (must be fully house trained)
A facility dog should have all four feet on the floor when greeting a person unless given a command like “rise/ pressure”
The team will demonstrate the level 1 skills at the facility (treats maybe used)
The team will be observed interacting with their typical population of clients (kids, adults, staff, etc)

Paperwork on site *

The facility dog handler will show proof of vaccinations and flea/ heartworm prevention for the facility dog
The facility handler will show proof of proper insurance for the dog at the facility
The facility handler will show proper staff training protocols for anyone handling their dog. These competencies must be completed and updated every 5 years and stored at the facility where the dog works. Individuals under the age of 18 years should be directly supervised when working with the facility dog.
All paperwork is stored physically or digitally on site

Paws Giving Independence is run completely on public donations. We are unique because our service dogs are placed free of charge and we currently have no paid staff. That is why we need your help to keep our program running. Many of our dogs are all rescued from shelters but we need your support to pay for the vet bills and everyday care.

We are a 501(c)(3) corporation and all donations are tax deductible.

Ten years ago, Donna from Uftring Automall, Uftring Subaru reached out to us about being the hometown charity for Subaru of America, Inc.'s Share the Love Event. When someone buys a Subaru during the event they have a choice of charities who will receive a $250 donation. Little did we know the impact that call would have on our program and how important it would be to our continuing our mission.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude today as we received a check for $14,159 along with an additional $1000.00 check. Over the past decade, Uftring Subaru and Subaru of America have donated a total of $94,846 to Paws Giving Independence. Their support has been instrumental to our success. A huge thank you to Gary, Mike, and the entire Uftring Subaru team for their unwavering dedication to our cause. Your generosity has made a real difference, especially during challenging times.

Rocky graduated a few weeks ago after training on Bradley University's campus. The kindergarten students were excited to introduce him to their newest class pets. Being a facility dog is full of new adventures and our facility dogs love their work.

🐾 Meet Lucy, our incredible facility dog on a mission! 🌟 This month, Lucy has been out and about, representing PGI at various community events, including a heartwarming luncheon at PFS Shelter and a special appearance at the Illinois Association for Medical Assistants. 🎉

At the luncheon, Lucy stole the show by demonstrating her skills, including pushing automatic door buttons with finesse! 💕

Lucy also visited the Illinois Association for Medical Assistants, where she wowed attendees with her service dog expertise, helping to raise awareness about the vital role of service dogs in the medical field. 🩺 Way to go, Lucy! 🐶

This past week was furlough week!!

What is furlough?

PGI is partnered with the Logan Correctional Center and their Helping Paws training program! This program allows these dogs to have targeted training conducted 24/7 by the amazing trainers there!

Once a month, for a week- PGI dogs come out from the Logan Correctional Center to student trainers on college campuses and also trained community members! This allows the dogs to get exposure to new environments!

Mango, Bentley, Gunner, Arlo, Daisie, Flynn, and Lily all had an amazing time!!
